Christy Grandjean - Fine Artist
Christy 'Goldenwolf' Grandjean (also known as “Goldie”) is a mostly self-taught artist who loves all things wild and natural. From the time she was old enough to hold a crayon Christy has been drawing, amazing her teachers and peers alike with her natural talents. Never formally trained outside of grade school, she has learned her skills from what little she was taught in school and from her artistic peers and influences, and of course, good old trial and error.
Since she was a young girl, Christy's parents have been taking her on camping trips both long and short and have instilled within her a love and harmony with nature and especially the animal world. Animals have always been a part of her life, her family owning many cats, dogs, mice, hamsters, ducks, snakes, lizards, chickens, and even a raccoon. Animals have always fascinated Christy, and she has always found a kinship with them.
Christy specializes in what she likes to call 'Anthropomorphic Wildlife' (anthropomorphic of course meaning something that is not human with human-like qualities), a blend of animal with human anatomy and culture, yet keeping close to the original traits of the animal. This style makes up the body of her work, however Christy is very much into nature spirituality and visionary artwork and does spiritual animal pieces as well that reflect her own reverence and awe of the natural world, spiritual concepts, and the animal kingdom. A legend in the anthropomorphic community, Christy's originals have sold for upwards of $9,000, making her the premier anthropomorphic artist in the world.
Christy has this to say about her unique artwork:
'I believe that everyone has an animal within them. I also believe that the animals have a lot of us in them as well. We are all connected. I strive to show this inherit connection between man and animal in my art in a way that hopefully helps the viewer to connect to their own animal nature.
The blend of human and animal is called 'Anthropomporphism', which is a broad term that means something that is non-human having human-like traits. Anything can be anthropomorphized, but in this case when I refer to my subjects as 'Anthros', I am talking about humanized animals...or animalized humans.
Sometimes my subjects are shapeshifters, either in a shamanic sense or a fantasy/horror sense. Sometimes they are simply anthros and exist as they are, unchanging. Sometimes my intent is to show that mystical connection between human and animal, and sometimes it is just for fun, to explore the possibilities of a fantasy race, or to blend a human culture with its native animals. Other times I wish to explore that darkness within myself and human nature with my werewolves, the untamed, savage wild that still exists deep within our own souls.
I create my art for many reasons, but mainly it is to express the wild within my own soul, the animal that lives within my own heart, and thus the reason why most of my subjects are wolves. I identify closely with wolves, idolizing their society, their freedom, their strength, and their untamed wildness. I suppose on some level I long to be as wild and free, as beautiful and strong, and all of that comes out in my artwork.'
A love of animals and nature, a spiritual connection to the natural world and a desire to bring to life creatures that have never existed are Christy's passions. Currently she is taking her art in a new direction towards the fine art world, and will be focusing on the spiritual connection between man and animal, as well as shamanic totem visions that she is sure will appeal to a wider audience.
Christy is currently single and living in Boulder, CO with her roommate Sandra of Windwolf Studio, her cat Mitzi, and her dog Freya, which are her only children.
